Whether you’re enjoying a quiet evening or celebrating special times, Great Shoals sparkling wine has a place in your glass. Our hand crafted wines will mark any occasion with a crisp taste and tiny bubbles.
We use apples, pears, peaches, grapes, and other fruits from local and regional sources to create dry sparkling wines using the traditional méthode champenoise. Each bottle of our wine is filled with distinctive and complex flavors melded by the champagne process.
Operations of Great Shoals Winery are based in Mount Vernon, Somerset County, MD, along a sandy bank of the Wicomico River, not far from Great Shoals Light on the Upper Tangier Sound of the Chesapeake Bay. We produce two types of sparkling wine – Great Shoals champagne-style wine and our hard cider-style wine.
Formal production of our champagne-style sparkling wines began with the 2010 harvest season which provided a bountiful crop of wonderful Maryland apples. Two champagne-style wines were released in early August 2011 including Great Shoals Apple Sparkling and Great Shoals Pomme Grenade. We are thrilled to share that Apple Sparkling won Silver and Pomme Grenade won Bronze at the 2011 Maryland Governor’s Cup.
The winery celebrated its premier release with the cider-style Spencerville Red Hard Apple on March 17th thru 19th, 2011 at Heyser’s Market in Colesville, MD (Montgomery County). We are pleased to announce this sparkling wine won Gold and Best Hard Cider at the 2011 Governor’s Cup. Spencerville Red Hard Apple also won Silver and Best Sparkling at the 2011 Maryland Winemasters Choice Competition.
