Great Shoals Winery Lands Two Gold Medals and Two Best in Class Awards from 2012 Maryland Governor’s Cup Wine Competition

The 2012 Maryland Governor’s Cup Competition was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Timonium, MD on August 25. We are pleased to announce two of our wines scored well in the competition. Great Shoals’ 2011 Vidal Sparkling and 2011 Spencerville Red Hard Apple each won a Gold Medal. Additionally, Vidal Sparkling earned Best in Class – Best Sparkling and Spencerville Red earned Best in Class – Best Hard Cider.

The 2011 Vidal Sparkling is a 90 case production of methode champenoise sparkling wine using 100% Vidal blanc fruit harvested from the lower Eastern Shore’s Noble Farm Vineyard in Eden, MD.

The 2011 Spenverville Red Hard Apple is a 400 case production of bottle fermented cider using a blend of late season apples that mostly included the local apple variety Spencerville Red. Spencerville Red apples were developed and are grown by Heyser Farms of Colesville, MD – Montgomery County.

Delaware’s First Hard Cider – Black Twig Hard Apple

April 2, 2011 saw the successful release of Delaware’s first hard cider – Black Twig Hard Apple, a new cider-style sparkling wine produced and bottled by Great Shoals Winery. Black Twig Hard Apple is made using a blend of mostly black twig apples that were grown by TS Smith & Sons of Bridgeville, DE.

We’d like to give a special thanks to Greer Stangl and Charlie Smith of TS Smith & Sons for making the project possible, as well as organizing such a wonderful release event at the farm market in Bridgeville.
